Whitening FAQ
How do teeth become discoloured?
It is normal for some people’s teeth to be more yellow or darker than others, even when they are quite healthy. They can also become discoloured if their roots have been damaged or diseased and the 'nerve' has 'died'.
How do whitening treatments work?
Whitening treatments will improve the appearance of your teeth without removing any of the natural tooth surface. It is a better option than a crown or veneer if you want to lighten the colour of healthy teeth, as the placing of crowns and veneers involves changing the shape of the tooth.
Is whitening suitable for everyone?
Whilst most people are suitable, there are a few exceptions which we will discuss these with you at your assessment appointment.
For example, if you have had fillings or crowns in the front of the mouth, these will not change colour and may cause a mis-match. Sometimes these fillings and crowns can be lighter in which case the surrounding teeth could be carefully whitened to match as nearly as possible.
The advantage of using Clarence House is that we are properly trained to assess whether whitening is the most appropriate solution for you and discuss whether to opt for in-surgery or home whitening.
Is it safe to whiten my teeth?
As you would expect from Clarence House, we only use the products we know to be safe and effective.
When should I do it?
Whitening can be done at any time. However, if you are planning some cosmetic work, we would normally advise you start with whitening. Any new work would then be made to match the new shade of your teeth for a consistent white smile.
How white will my teeth be?
We use a shade guide to identify the original colour of your teeth which allows you to compare this with colour of your teeth on completion of your treatment.
Are there any side effects of tooth whitening?
It is perfectly normal for your teeth to be sensitive to hot and cold food and drink for a few days after treatment.
How long does tooth whitening last?
The colour change is permanent although teeth can fade back a little over time. However, the amount of fade is minimal and you will not return to your original shade. With the home system, you can buy the gel and apply it using your existing trays to top up the whitening 18 months – 2 years later.
