Why See your Hygienist?

About Your Gums

Simply put, your gums and bone support your teeth and act as their foundation. The weaker the foundation, the less support your teeth have and the more likely you are to lose them.

About Gum Disease {Periodontal Disease}

Gum Disease:
      • will weaken the ability of your bone and gum to act as the support for your teeth
      • is the most common disease known to man, affecting 90% of the worlds population
      • is responsible for the loss of more teeth than tooth decay.

Why you need to act now

Most people suffering from gum disease are unaware that they are!:

• Until the later stages, it is usually completely painless.
• There are few obvious symptoms
• Unchecked, gum disease progresses leading to tooth loss.  However, if

treated promptly and early, the diease can be slowed, stopped and    sometimes reversed.

What Symptoms are there?

Are your gums red or slightly swollen?

Do your gums ever bleed?
Do you have bad breath?
Do you get a bad taste in your mouth?

If you have answered 'Yes' to any of the above, you should have your mouth checked for gum disease.

Plaque often hides where your teeth meet your gums. If not removed, the bacteria start to produce toxins which are very harmful to gums.
If plaque is allowed to accumulate in these areas then the gums will become inflamed. The first signs of this are often bad breath, soreness on brushing and bleeding.
Over time the gums will recede, the bone and supporting tissue will be destroyed and the teeth will become loose, start to drift and eventually be lost.

How is Gum Disease Caused?

By Plaque which is:

• a film of bacteria, which you may have noticed as a sticky, yellowish deposit on your teeth
constantly forming on your teeth and gums and makes then feel 'furry'

Smoking has a DEFINITE effect for all smokers and makes gum disease significantly worse

What Damage does Plaque Do?

Plaque Causes:

• Decay

• Gum Inflammation which can lead to gum recession
• Gum disease

If plaque is not regularly and thoroughly removed, it hardens to form calculus(tartar) which cannot be brushed off and will require removal by the hygienist.
