At Clarence House we have a strong prevention-based philosophy. With the benefit of new and exciting research and advances in dental technology, we are now more confident in our ability to treat the base causes of dental decay as opposed to just treating the effects. This can significantly reduce the need for future dental treatments and enhance the predictability and longevity of any treatment carried out. Dental Decay In the past, the treament of dental decay centered on dealing with the holes eg. fillings and crowns or even extractions. These cavities are the result of a disease process rather than the disease itself. Recent research has reinforced the importance of creating and maintaining an optimum oral environment that prevents the progression of this disease and thus reducing the number of cavities.
Assessment To determine exactly which factors are causing dental decay for a specific person, we carry out a Decay Risk Assessment. This comprises a detailed oral health examination together with a range of diagnostic tests and screenings [saliva, diet, dental history, medical history, occupation, sports activity]. We use the information collected to accurately determine the root cause of an individual's dental decay and to prescribe an appropriate prevention regime.
Preventive Regime With the help of newly available products and protocols, we can target an individual's specific decay factors identified during the assessment. This enables us to control their oral environment, stopping the decay disease in its tracks. We are now more aware of the importance of diet, saliva and minerals working together to achieve this. It is even possible to repair early decay, avoiding the need for a conventional filling, and to reduce the need for future treatment.
Monitoring Close monitoring is an integral part of our preventive regime. It allows us to quickly determine the effectiveness of a given regime. This enables us to make any necessary minor modifications to ensure appropriate improvements.
What does this mean for you? Whether a child or an adult, we are convinced that by following our individually tailored preventive regimes, you will need less future treatment and enhance the longevity of existing dental work, giving you a healthy, comfortable, confident smile for life. |
